Frequently asked questions
🚤 What is towed foiling?

This is a foil session (e-foil, surf foil, wing foil, etc.) in which the rider is towed by a boat (or a jet ski) rather than being propelled by a wave, the wind or a built-in motor. This makes it easier to build up speed and ‘fly’ above the water.

🤷 What is towed foiling used for?

Mainly to make faster progress: understanding balance, managing take-off, refining your lines and footwork, without having to paddle, pump or wait for the right wave. It’s a real ‘progress booster’.

📚 Do you need to know how to foil before you can try towed foiling?

It isn’t strictly necessary, but it’s much more effective if you already have some basic skills (standing up, controlling your speed). Complete beginners can get started, but only with supervision and at a very controlled pace.

⚡ Is towed foiling dangerous?

As with any towed activity, there are risks (falling, impact, rope, propeller); safety depends on: compulsory lifejackets, appropriate speed, a clear area for the activity, an observer on board, and clear instructions before each session.

🏄 Does towed foiling replace wave foiling or wing foiling?

No, it’s a supplement: it helps you improve your pure technique (balance, footwork, line choice) more quickly, but it doesn’t replace reading the waves in surf foil or managing the wind in wing foil.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Can you go foil-boarding whilst being towed with family or friends?

Yes, especially if the competitors are closely matched and the boat can complete several runs in succession; this is often done in small groups to make the most of the time on the water.

🦺 What do you need to bring for a towed foil session?

Wetsuit (depending on the season), lifejacket (provided and compulsory), sun cream, towel/change of clothes.
